Church parishioner loses money in pastor impersonation scam

9 October 2026 · Source: vnews.com

A parishioner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hanover bought gift cards after receiving an email that appeared to come from the rector. The message was fake, and the person behind it used the pastor’s name and other church members’ names to make the request seem real. The parishioner spent $2,000 before realizing it was a scam and contacting the church and police. This kind of impersonation can quickly turn into financial loss for businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations when scammers target trusted relationships. Sender Registry helps companies spot suspicious sender behavior, reduce the chance that fake requests reach staff or customers, and catch impersonation attempts before they lead to fraud.
