AI driven executive impersonation fuels invoice fraud

11 September 2026 · Source: microsoft.com

Microsoft reported a large email fraud campaign that used third party sending infrastructure to deliver more than a million messages. The emails impersonated company executives, included fake invoice details and copied conversation threads, and tried to push accounts payable teams to approve ACH payments of nearly 50,000 dollars. Microsoft said the messages showed signs of generative AI use and relied on lookalike domains and fabricated branding, while the real organizations named in the lures were not compromised. This matters because finance teams can be tricked into paying a fake invoice when an email appears to come from a trusted leader or vendor. Sender Registry helps businesses spot suspicious sender identities, lookalike domains, and impersonation patterns before staff act on them, reducing the chance of invoice fraud and executive spoofing reaching payment approval.

How Sender Registry helps

Impersonation Radar watches certificate logs for lookalike domains the moment they are registered, so a fake is caught before it is ever used against you.
